This website contains a variety of resources to support Middle School students with engaging learning opportunities to spend part of their summer vacations. Aside from any assignments or recommendations found in these pages, it is highly recommended that students:These activities include:
- Regular exercise and time outdoors. Although it is important to protect oneself from too much UV rays, being outside is an important source of Vitamin D, which helps build one's immune system.
- Regular routines, at least 9 hours of sleep per night, good nutrition.
- READ! Reading is good for your brain, not just for school. Aside from any assigned readings in the Middle School Summer Learning and Discovery website, read for fun, read what is of interest to you. Pick up a book, a magazine, get away from the computer screen and enjoy the pleasure of the magic of the written word.
- Play, invent, cook, build. Discover the power of designing and creating things. Build a fort, a go-cart, try designing and sewing items of clothing. History is full of amazing stories of great inventors and scientists who changed the world. They started at your age taking things apart, putting them together and creating their own inventions.
- Engage in meaningful, positive conversations and dialogue. Talk to your parents about things that are happening in the world, not just COVID-19, but the economy, their views on current events, plans for your future. They were your age not that long ago and sharing your experiences, dreams and aspirations brings us together and develops empathy and respect.
- Play music. Not the radio or your MP3 Player, but discover the power of making your own music, whether that be a traditional instrument like a piano or guitar or through digital applications. Research on the human brain has shown that no other activities stimulates more parts of the brain than playing a musical instrument. Practicing your musical instrument can become one of the most rewarding experiences of your summer holidays.
- Have fun! Summer is a time to relax and renew your energy. Play is good. We learn through play. All intelligent animals play, even middle schoolers! Not that you are animals, but we intelligent beings that learn through play. Watch puppies or kittens. It is the most natural way to learn.
